Ever feel like you’re in a funk; like you can’t quite put your finger on what’s bothering you? Maybe you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed or maybe it feels like you’re not really connected to the world around you?
We’re living in the era of “NOW”. We want this to load NOW, we want our orders to come in NOW, we want to get there NOW. In this age, it’s hard to slow down. And when you start to slow down, you go online and see you’re not doing anything that’s as exciting as the things your peers are doing; you wonder if you’re missing out on something that you were supposed to be a part of.
Usually, this is when the funk decides to hang around you for a bit. It can feel like you’re walking on one of those moving sidewalks in airports; you don’t really feel yourself walking or seeing where you’re going, but you’re moving and the day still passes by you. Or it can feel like you’re in a room with no windows, no clock, no sense of time; you feel trapped.
Below, I’ve put together a few tips to help you get rid of that “funk” and tips to help you start to feel grounded again.
1. Go on a nature stroll!
This can be as simple as walking around your neighborhood block or, if you’re feeling adventurous, look up some local nature or hiking trails near you! Studies have proven that spending some quality time outside decreases risks of depression and also increases life satisfaction.
2. Get artsy!
Express yourself in the best way that you can. Personally, I enjoy journalling to stay mindful of my surroundings but I’m also a fan of coloring. Coloring isn’t just for toddlers, you know. It’s been said that coloring can reduce anxiety and lower stress levels!
3. Pick up a hobby!
A hobby that you enjoy creates something to look forward to in your week. It can be ANY hobby that you find interesting. For example, I’m no advanced yogi, but I love doing yoga. In addition, I’ll also strum a few chords on my ukulele. Picking up a fun hobby allows you to set time aside for YOU. Not the nine to five you, not the dependable friend/sibling you, not the responsible and organized you, but the you that is completely free ; free from all stressors and distractions in your life.
4. Three words: Treat. Your. Self.
Splurge on whatever brings you joy! This can be anything ranging from clothes, snacks, accessories, fancy new technology devices - literally
A N Y T H I N G your heart desires ( that fits your budget of course )
5. Plan something too look forward to- even if, realistically, you can’t go.
Planning a dream vacation to Hawaii or somewhere in Europe will get you excited about the possibilities of the future! Even if realistically you can’t go now, maybe one day you can! And you’ll already have the tripped all planned out.
Remember: It’s okay to not be okay. But only for a little while. If you’re stuck in the funk for a continuous amount of time, reach out to friends and family and tell them how you’ve been feeling. Talk to a therapist to get a better understanding of your mental state.
