I believe that curiosity, wonder, and passion are defining qualities of imaginative minds and great teachers; that restlessness and discontent are vital things; and that intense experience and suffering instruct us in ways that less intense emotions can ever do"
- Kay Redfield Jamison
Have you been distracted by the haunting feeling that you were meant for something greater? Has the mundanity of daily life left you feeling unsatisfied and yearning for more meaning or purpose?
What is this dissatisfaction? No matter where you turn, it follows. It brings along even more questions that only fuel this sense of dissatisfaction. While you may have many things to be grateful for, this nagging sense remains and you are left with the thought: this is all wonderful, but I need more. This is what some of you may recognize as restlessness.
Now, is this all bad? No, and it might even be more of a gift.
Why? Because it awakens you to think bigger for yourself. It provokes you to respond to a strong inner urge that inexplicably lays heavy on your heart and calls for your attention. It speaks to you in illogical ways and leaves behind a soul sensing pull that cannot be ignored. You can’t run from this feeling. No matter what you do, it remains until you face it, head on. This is your call to shift: to change something in your life in order to satisfactorily respond to your heart’s desires. The more you ignore this nudge, the stronger it gets. Eventually it becomes so uncomfortable that you are left with no choice but to succumb to its will and listen carefully to what it’s trying to tell you.
But there is a silver lining to this. Yes, restlessness finally catches up to you one way or another, but it doesn’t need to be uncomfortable. There are pivotal moments in which these restless whispers present you with a choice: resist the wisdom shared with you or dare to face it. Now, how do you face the whisper head on? By surrendering to the insights it shares, allowing natural shifts to play out as they are meant to, and relinquishing the need to interfere.
The choice you make – resist it or face it – is what differentiates the level of strain that restlessness induces upon one’s life. At the core of this experience is a tug-of-war like dilemma between living within the confines of a predictable, comfortable existence or allowing yourself to explore a greater existence. Will you live a predictable, but not necessarily fulfilling life, or will you respond to the undercurrent feelings of discontent, and courageously ask: what do you need from me?
On the days that you sit there, restless, contemplating your purpose and how you can live more fully, remember that this isn’t meant to leave you with a hollow sense of emptiness and guilt. This is an invitation from a higher force. A force that sees your true potential and asks you to respond to its plea for you to step forward into your own greatness.
Restlessness is a wake-up call – are you answering?
